Inputs Price Update 23rd February 2012 February 23, 2012

Filed under: Barley,Currency,February 2012,Feed,Fuel,Grain,Maize,Milling,Oats,Oil Seed Rape,Soya,Wheat — Ethan Cleary @ 3:57 pm

Irish grain prices for both old and new crop have eased off recent highs. Dried old Irish crop wheat is trading at €210/t down €2/t since Tuesday. New crop wheat is currently trading at €188/t gaining €3/t on yesterday’s close. Old crop barley has remained more resilient at €208/t with new crop back €3/t since Tuesday. Oats remains unchanged at €210/t with new crop down €2/t at €188/t.

Progress on the Greek crisis has seen the euro strengthen leaving European grain less competitive. In addition talks of a sizable increase in US maize sowings to an area not seen since 1944 is impacting on new crop feed grain prices. However strengthening soybean prices coupled with more expensive nitrogen may dampen farmer enthusiasm for a large swing to maize.

The deep freeze of many Russian ports over the last month has been supportive of old crop prices as it delayed the shipment of an estimated 1 million tonnes of grains, mostly wheat. Since July Russian grain exports were estimated at just under 20mt averaging 2.5mt per month. Market analysts predict that a further 5mt will be exported between now and the end of the current marketing year on the 30th of June.

Fuel price update

Crude oil prices continue to rise with Brent crude hitting a high of $124.01 last night before easing to $122.49 earlier today. The ongoing geo-political tensions between Iran and the West have created a significant price risk premium and this is putting upward pressure on petrol, diesel and marked gas oil (tractor diesel) prices. A strengthening euro should mitigate some of the increase.

IFA FERTILISER PRICE SURVEY – 22nd February 2012 February 23, 2012

Local price wars are keeping downward pressure on prices as merchants scrap for good business. Volumes traded have eased as early movers have completed deals and many other farmers adopt a wait and see approach to price direction. The South East remains the most competitive for granular urea with deals still on offer around the €400/t level and 10-10-20 available at €460/t for bagged product (top lift) delivered farm. Demand across mainland Europe is picking up as temperatures improve.

Competition for good business has kept prices largely unchanged this week with keenest quotes available for full loads (24t+) and volume orders. Activity has picked up but traded volumes continue to lag previous year’s sales. A local turf war in the South East saw granular urea offered at €400/t and 10-10-20 at €460/t both bagged (top lift) delivered farm in the last week. Cold weather across Europe coupled with the ongoing euro-zone crisis and its impact on credit availability has seen demand ease. With continuing downward pressure on international wholesale prices EU merchants and farmers remain reluctant to commit on large volumes.

Activity has picked up this week but volumes traded to farmers lag previous year’s sales. This may lead to some bottlenecks on the supply side when the season gets into full swing. According to trade sources Irish urea stocks are significantly below last year’s levels but despite this prices have remained unchanged from last week. Many farmers are reluctant to use urea despite the significant discount it trades at relative to CAN. Even allowing for higher losses which are calculated at 15% urea is significantly cheaper than CAN on a per unit nitrogen basis. Competition for good business remains keen particularly where farmers are group purchasing or farmers come together informally to coordinate full loads. Keenest quotes for CAN range from €310/t to €317/t marginally up on last week, with granular urea from €410/t to €420/t. International wholesale prices remain strong as the market gets into full swing across the Northern Hemisphere and also buoyed by the recent recovery in grain and oilseed prices. Manufacturers will attempt to maintain or increase current price levels over the next six to eight weeks before prices start to drop as the buying season across Europe comes to a close.

Despite the trade continuing to talk up the price of fertiliser by €10/t competition for good business continues to see the keenest quotes for CAN range from €308/t to €317/t, with granular urea from €410/t to €420/t. Arkady brought in a boatload of prilled urea to the North East and this is being offered at €410/t bagged or at €395/t in bulk. Market activity has picked up in recent days. The arrival of three new formulations for malting barley known as Malt Master Fertiliser from Glanbia has seen competition hotting in the South Midlands and the South East. Target in response have introduced a compound 11N- 6P-17K containing 1% more phosphorous but competing at the same price.
