Feed Ingredient and Fuel Price 21st December 2011 December 21, 2011

Filed under: Barley,CAN,Currency,December 2011,Feed,Fuel,Grain,Oats,Oil Seed Rape,Soya,USDA,Wheat — Ethan Cleary @ 1:55 pm

Grain prices have steadied with wheat and barley trading from €188/t to €190/t.

New crop prices have also hardened slightly with harvest 2012 wheat at €174/t to €175/t and barley €5/t to €6/t under.

Wholesale international fertiliser prices continue to fall with granular urea down over $110/t since early November. Official quotes for CAN have not moved but deals are being done €15 to €20/t under official quotes. Rapidly falling urea prices are putting increased downward pressure on CAN prices as farmers switch to urea. European buyers continue to stand back from the market in anticipation that prices will fall further.

On the home front quotes for bagged CAN delivered have fallen below the €320/t mark with granular urea being traded under €440/t.

Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Grain Update 21st September 2011 September 22, 2011

The ongoing turmoil on financial markets over the last week is impacting on agricultural commodity prices. Compounders are buying hand to mouth as some merchants and farmers move to offload surplus grain rather than take outside stores. Spot barley is trading from €186/t to €189/t, with plus €3/t on offer for November.

Wheat prices eased by €2/t to €3/t since Monday, with €193/t to €196/t on offer for spot movement and €196/t to €199 on offer for November collection. Poorer than expected US crop ratings at the start of the week for both soybeans and maize continues to underpin protein and feed grain prices. However, some analysts are saying that the write down of US corn yields has been overdone and that yields may be revised upwards in the USDA’s October crop report.

Grain Update – 27 July 2011 July 27, 2011

  • The write down of the US maize crop’s “good to excellent ratings” by 7 percentage points (minus10% on last year) over the last fortnight remains the key driver for world feed grain prices and is indirectly supporting milling wheat prices. European malting barley supplies remain tight on the back of ongoing quality concerns, with feeding barley trading at parity with feed wheat.
  • In this week’s crop-progress report the USDA cut its “good to excellent” rating for maize by 4percentage points to 62% and for soybeans by 2 percentage points to 62%. The higher than expected write-downs drove markets higher.
  • Heavy discounting by Russia on EU ($36 – $40/t) and US ($31 – $36/t) origin milling wheat and talks of a 92mt Russian grain harvest is unnerving the market. However, there are quality concerns emerging in central and northern Europe as rains continue to delay harvest. Earlier this week the Czech Ministry of Agriculture said that milling quality may suffer as harvest progress is hampered by showery weather.  The long range forecast for the weekend is for drier weather to extend across much of central Europe.
  • Weather and its impact on crop yields and quality coupled with currency issues will dictate price direction over the coming weeks
  • Interestingly European growers have sold forward up to 30% (reportedly up to 50%in Germany) of this year’s crop and this should ease harvest pressure when harvest gets into full swing.
  • In Kazakhstan this year’s harvest forecast has been raised to 14.5-15mt (12.2mt in 2010). This would leave them with an exportable surplus of 6.5mt to 7mt for the 2011/12 crop year.
  • In the Ukraine just short of 80% of the winter crop has been harvested. Wheat yields are averaging 3.27t/ha with 18.5mt harvested to date. Rain is delaying completion of the harvest.
  •  New crop dried Irish barley prices opened the week at €188 to €190/t for, with €190 to €193 on offer today. Harvest wheat €192 to €193/t is on offer for harvestwheat. With the rebound in US maize crop prices  New crop wheat is trading from €192 to €195/t.  Green price offers for barley are ranging from €157 to €160/t (at 20% moisture, excl. vat).
  • Old crop wheat is trading from €220 to €222/t and barley from €202 to €204/t.
  • Winter barley harvest is progressing well. Yields are variable ranging from 2.6t/ac up to over 4t/ac.With a bigger acreage cut the average yield looks like 3.1t 3.3t/ac. Bushel weights in general are excellent ranging from the mid sixties to the low seventies.
  • Early reports from the winter OSR crop are for good yields, ranging from 1.8t to 2.1t/ac. Moisture’s have come down well with crops coming in from 9% to 11% moisture.
